Three Tanka

The world is not meant
To be an easy place in
Which to live your life;
If it were there would be no
Need for the promised Heaven.

Everyone tries to
Accomplish their fondest dreams
In the time given,
But dreams only come true when
People live with devotion.

Go forth and conquer
All the many tasks you have
Now undertaken;
Success is within your reach
Just believe and then achieve.

April Poem A Day Challenge, poem sixteen:

Name Confusion

When I place orders
Using the Discover Card
There is always some
Mix up because of the names
To send to and to bill to.

It happened again
Just today when I purchased
A replacement for
My Bose SoundDock which would not
Work because of lightning strike.

I hope it works out
Since I sent the damaged one
Back by UPS
I want the new one as soon
As it can be sent to me.

Augmented Creation

Slash dash poetry
Appears in a thought balloon
With the push of a
Button, over the head of
A man in a strap on mask.

Such is the magic
Of cartoons generated
On a computer
You still need talent for art
But it is easier now.

April Poem A Day Challenge, poem fourteen:

Civilization’s End

It will not end in
Ice, but fire, the prophets say.
Yet, I think it ends
When good people look away
From the needs of their fellows.

An explosion may
Cause huge destruction and death.
That is a symptom
Of the ongoing malaise
Threatening due to neglect.

Our population
Will not survive and flourish
Without care given
To those unfortunates who
Live in abject poverty.

We must attempt to
Bring the poor more financial
Freedom expecting
Wealth to bring some lasting peace
And somewhat less jealousy.

If not we risk the
End of civilization
Bought by ignorance,
Fires of hate glow ever bright
Against inequality.

April Poem A Day Challenge, poem twelve:

Something Dreamed Of

The days hurriedly
Pass with scarcely time to dream,
But I often do,
Believing dreams will come true
And I will have what I wish.

Will I finally
Accomplish difficult tasks
That bring great reward,
Writing the novel dreamed of
For a multitude of years?

I have not a clue
If this is something I can
Honestly achieve,
But I have abundant hope
And faith in my own vision.

April Poem A Day Challenge, poem eleven:

Spring

It jumps out upon
Us with no warning
Exploding everything
In luscious green.

The air fills with
Yellow that settles
On anything sitting
For a moment still.

Sultry heat bears
Down causing early
Use of air conditioning
To keep us comfortable.

Myriad flowers bloom
Exciting our romantic
Notions of the season
We celebrate, Spring.

April Poem A Day Challenge, poem ten:

Growth Despite

A tree is supposed
To grow unfettered,
Strong and very tall
With outreaching limbs,

But our family tree
Is stunted with limbs
That have fallen away
Not clinging to the trunk.

There is hope those
Limbs might be grafted
Back in so the branches
Might again grow strong,

But there is no guarantee
The issues will be resolved,
So we build upon the limbs
That remain fully attached.

Quandary

Taking pictures
Of flowers bordering
Parking lots has
Become routine,

But the photo
Opportunity
An outdoor display
Provided was too
Tempting to disregard.

I captured all
Those beautiful blooms
Without purchasing
Even one. Shady?

Rejected Again

I sent a request
Knowing she was part
Of your life now,
But hoping our history
Would mean something
To you even still.

I thought Facebook
Was safe enough,
Removed from intimacy,
That you would allow
Our cyber friendship,
But you denied me.

April Poem A Day Challenge, poem seven:

Encounter at Wal-Mart

The aisles were crowded
With frantic shoppers
Going in every direction.

I pushed my cart with
Leisurely ease picking
Out things at need.

Suddenly I was caught
Face to face across carts
With an unsmiling man.

I upturned my lips,
Nodded my head,
And he frowned at me.

I dropped my eyes
And pushed my cart aside,
Still holding to my smile.

I thought how sad
The man must be even
Though it was Good Friday.

April PAD Challenge, poem six:

Now Long Gone

His laugh infectious,
He hurried away
Quieting himself down
And hiding somewhere
Within the house.

We would then tell
Our Shih Tzu, Penny,
“Go find Alex!
Where is Alex?”
Off she would go.

Penny would prance
From place to place
Her head held high
Nose twitching
Until she found him.

Then she would bark
With unbridled joy
Because she had
Once again successfully
Found her boy.

Those days are hidden
Long in the past, only
Echoing memories remain
Penny is an old dog,
Alex a grown man.
